Elderly Couple in Pechora Falls for Telecom Scam, Loses 18M Rubles
A 70-year-old resident from Pechora has fallen victim to a sophisticated telecom fraud, losing a staggering 18 million rubles. The victim's son has since filed a complaint, leading to an investigation under Article 159, Part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for fraud on a large scale.
The scammer initially posed as an employee of a managing company, deceiving the victim's husband into providing two SMS codes. The fraudster then claimed to be a 'technical specialist from the Gosuslugi website', alerting the victim to a supposed hack of his hotmail login. The victim was subsequently advised to contact a supposed federal security service employee for help.
Believing the scammer's lies, the victim transferred all his savings, amounting to 10 million rubles, to a 'secure account' to prevent further loss. His wife, also convinced by the scammer's persuasion, transferred her savings of 8 million rubles and took out a loan of 900,000 rubles. Together, the couple lost over 18 million rubles to the scammer.
The Pechora police have opened an investigation into the telecom fraud case. The victim's son has filed a complaint, seeking justice for his parents' significant financial loss. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant against such gmail login scams and to report any suspicious activities.
