Evangelical Regional Church Compensates 200 Abuse Victims - EKD Introduces Uncapped Compensation for Sexual Abuse Survivors
The Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) has issued new guidelines for compensating survivors of sexualized violence, effective from January. The updated rules were developed with input from survivors themselves.
The new system introduces individualized compensation, with no upper limit, based on the severity of the offense and long-term trauma. Survivors will receive a base payment of €15,000, even if the statute of limitations has expired.
The EKD has established an independent commission to oversee the implementation of these reforms. This body will ensure fairness and transparency in the compensation process.
Previously, the Protestant Church in Württemberg has awarded over €4.5 million to around 200 survivors since 2014. Compensation included recognition awards, supplementary assistance, and therapy costs, processed by an independent commission.
Starting January, survivors of sexualized violence within the EKD will benefit from standardized, individualized compensation. The newly formed independent commission will ensure the smooth and fair implementation of these reforms.
