The Ministry of Economy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and SGS Gulf Limited have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance quality control over food and consumer products in the country. This partnership focuses on improving consumer protection and product safety by strengthening inspections and oversight to ensure that food and other consumer goods meet high-quality standards.

The MoU, signed by Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Economy, and Geraldine Picaud, CEO of SGS Gulf Limited, highlights the Ministry's commitment to elevate standards related to product safety. SGS Gulf Limited, a global leader in inspection, verification, testing, and certification, brings expertise to support the Ministry in implementing these enhanced quality control measures across relevant sectors.

The initiatives under the MoU extend to cultivating a culture of product safety among youth. Specifically, the MoU includes awareness programs for the food and beverage, cosmetics, and general consumer product sectors, targeting educational institutions. SGS will handle inspections, product testing, and complaint verification for sensitive items like baby food and cosmetics.

The partnership aims to support the competitiveness of the UAE's business environment by simplifying certification processes and improving access to international markets, particularly for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The MoU promotes sound business practices and ensures compliance with the highest international safety and quality standards.

The collaboration does not specify any changes in the regulatory frameworks mentioned earlier. However, it sets a framework for collaboration in verifying consumer complaints and fosters a safer purchasing environment. The MoU does not mention any new parties joining the collaboration.

The signing ceremony was attended by Swiss Ambassador Arthur Mattli and senior SGS representatives.
