Dutch couple trades mortgage for tiny home freedom at 60
In their sixties, Nico and Margareth Bluigmars made a bold choice: they sold their family home and moved into a tiny house. The Dutch couple now live mortgage-free in Minitopia, a community of around 100 small homes near Rotterdam. Their decision was driven by a desire for financial freedom and a simpler way of life.
The Bluigmarses began their downsizing journey in mid-2021 when they sold their previous house. While their tiny home was being built, they lived temporarily in a caravan and an RV. By August 2022, construction was complete, and they moved into their new 30-square-metre space, which cost around €80,000 to build.
Their home includes modern comforts like underfloor heating, solar panels, and a heat pump. These features keep their electricity bills low, with total monthly expenses—including a €350 land lease—adding up to roughly €400. Margareth appreciates the ease of maintenance, noting that cleaning now takes no more than an hour. One of the biggest perks of their new lifestyle is the sense of community. Minitopia's residents often gather for meals or chats, creating a supportive environment. Nico even built a small loft area where their grandchildren can sleep over. Yet, the close quarters come with challenges—thin walls mean noise from neighbours can sometimes be disruptive. The couple chose tiny living partly because Dutch banks do not offer mortgages for such homes. Without this financial burden, they now enjoy greater flexibility in retirement. They also encourage other older adults to consider the switch, though they acknowledge that dedicated tiny house communities for seniors remain rare in the Netherlands.
The Bluigmarses' move has given them financial stability and a stronger connection to their neighbours. Their monthly costs are a fraction of what they once paid, and their solar-powered home keeps expenses predictable. While tiny living isn't without its trade-offs, they remain confident in their choice—and hopeful more retirees will explore the option.
