Dresden Boosts Infrastructure to Support Thriving Semiconductor Industry

Dresden is fortifying its infrastructure to support the flourishing semiconductor industry, known as Silicon Saxony. The city is expanding power and water networks, constructing new facilities, and attracting major players like TSMC and NXP.

Electricity demand is surging in the region, prompting 50Hertz GmbH to replace and expand substations and build new 380 kV overhead lines. A new substation in Altwilschdorf is planned by 2030 to meet the growing needs.

Water demand is also increasing, with the Dresden municipal wastewater treatment plant constructing a central industrial collector for transporting industrial wastewater. A new river water treatment plant in Ubigau will treat Elbe water for industrial use, ensuring no restrictions on drinking water supply.

To support this growth, the city is investing heavily. The water network expansion alone is expected to cost over 300 million euros. New fiber optic connections are being laid in Hellerau, Klotzsche, Weixdorf, and Wilschdorf for high-speed internet.

Dresden's semiconductor industry partners, including GlobalFoundries, Bosch, and Infineon, are collaborating in a joint venture (ESMC) to build a future-proof infrastructure. The upcoming chip factories of Infineon and ESMC can now plan with more supply security thanks to these improvements.

Dresden's commitment to its semiconductor industry is evident in its infrastructure investments. With these improvements, the city aims to remain the European center of the semiconductor news, attracting more businesses and ensuring a steady supply of power and water.
