Deceptive Packaging: Dr. Oetker Sells Half a Cake for the Same Price - Dr. Oetker's Cheese Crumble Cake Mix Shrinks by 50%: 'Shrinkflation Scam of the Month'

Dr. Oetker's cheese crumble cake mix has sparked controversy with a significant size reduction, drawing the attention of consumer protection groups. The product, now named the 'Shrinkflation Scam of the Month', has seen its quantity nearly halved, raising concerns about pricing tactics.

The popular cake mix, once 730 grams, is now 370 grams, a reduction of nearly 50%. Despite this, the price has only dropped by 5 cents, from €3.99 to €3.79. The Hamburg Consumer Protection Center has criticized this practice, known as 'shrinkflation', where companies reduce product sizes but maintain high prices. Dr. Oetker markets the new size as a 'reimagined classic' and a 'new product', despite the ingredients and instructions remaining largely unchanged.

The center allows the public to vote annually for the 'Shrinkflation Scam of the Year'. In 2023, Mondelez's Tuc Bake Rolls won the vote. The center keeps a close watch on such scams, naming the worst offenders each month. Other examples include Granini's 'Orange Drinking Pleasure', Lorenz's 'Peanut Curls', and Milka's 'Smiley Bunny'.

Dr. Oetker's cheese crumble cake mix reduction has highlighted the issue of 'shrinkflation'. While the product's price has only slightly decreased, its quantity has significantly reduced, leaving consumers paying more per gram. The Hamburg Consumer Protection Center's recognition of this practice as the 'Shrinkflation Scam of the Month' serves as a warning to consumers and a call for transparency in pricing.
