Dongfeng and Honda joint venture exports cars from China for the first instance
China's auto industry has been experiencing a surge in exports, and the latest addition to this growth is Dongfeng Honda, a joint venture between Dongfeng Motor and Japanese auto giant Honda. In May 2022, Dongfeng Honda began exporting its new energy vehicles (NEVs) from China, marking a significant milestone in the joint venture's operations.
The two production models that made their debut in China were the hybrid Honda CR-V and the all-electric e:NS1. The e:NS1, with its price range of RMB 175,000 to RMB 218,000 ($24,800 to $31,100), officially became available in China on April 27, 2022. However, Dongfeng Honda did not disclose the number of e:NS1s in the shipment.
This move comes at a time when Chinese auto exports have been on the rise. In May 2022, approximately 551,000 vehicles were exported from China, marking a 14.5% year-on-year increase. Within this total, passenger vehicle exports were about 468,000 units, growing 17.7% year-on-year, while commercial vehicle exports were 83,000 units, showing a decline.
The growth in Chinese auto exports is expected to continue with Dongfeng Honda's car exports. The hybrid Honda CR-V plug-in hybrids are scheduled to arrive at the Belgian port of Zeebrugge in late June 2022. After arrival, these vehicles will be shipped to about two dozen countries, including the UK, Ireland, Iceland, Greece, and Portugal.
The start of Dongfeng Honda's car exports is not the only significant event in China's auto industry. GAC Honda also has a production model, e:NP1, that made its debut in China at the same time as Dongfeng Honda's e:NS1. The export of vehicles from China includes both Dongfeng Honda's and GAC Honda's new energy vehicles (NEVs).
Dongfeng Honda's overseas endeavors mark a new chapter in the joint venture's operations. The company held a launch event for its electrification efforts in China on October 13, 2021, where it officially unveiled its pure electric vehicle brand e:N. The "e" in e:N stands for Energize and Electric, while the "N" refers to New and Next.
The shipment of vehicles from Shanghai to Europe started on May 15, 2022. This data highlights a significant growth in Chinese auto exports in that month, reflecting overall strong export momentum for the auto industry during this period. It is an exciting time for China's auto industry, with Dongfeng Honda's export of vehicles marking just one of many milestones in the industry's growth.
