Diocese of San Joaquin reveals candidates for the bishop position

The Diocese of San Joaquin, based in Fresno, California, has announced a slate of four candidates for its sixth bishop. The electing convention for this significant appointment will take place at St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Fresno on October 18, 2025.

The slate's release marks the beginning of the petition process, which will close at 11:59 p.m. on July 6. The candidates vying for the position are The Rev. Anna Carmichael, The Rev. Rob Keim, The Rev. Greg Kimura, and The Rev. Shawn Wamsley.

The Rev. Anna Carmichael has been the Diocese of San Joaquin's canon to the ordinary and transition officer since 2016. The Rev. Rob Keim is the rector of St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church in Arroyo Grande, California. The Rev. Greg Kimura is the rector of St. James' Episcopal Church in South Pasadena, California. The Diocese of Pennsylvania's canon to the ordinary and chief of staff, however, remains unnamed in the search results.

The Rev. Shawn Wamsley is a familiar name within the Diocese of Pennsylvania, having served in this role. It is the Diocese where the bishop-elect, after completing The Episcopal Church's consent process, is scheduled to be consecrated by Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe at St. James on April 18, 2026.

The bishop-elect would succeed the Rt. Rev. David C. Rice, who announced his plans to retire in spring 2026. Rice was elected bishop diocesan in 2017 after serving as the diocese's provisional bishop for three years. His tenure has been marked by the Diocese of San Joaquin's hard work to heal and rebuild since 2007, following a departure of many Episcopalians led by former Bishop John David Schofield.

The Diocese of San Joaquin serves 19 congregations throughout California's Central Valley, portions of the eastern Sierra Nevada range, and the Mojave Desert. Additional information about the bishop search can be found on the diocesan website's bishop search page.

The consecration of the new bishop is set to be a significant event for the Diocese of San Joaquin, marking a new chapter in its journey towards continued growth and unity.
