BRAZIL: Diesel Prices Slashed Again by Petrobras
Petrobras, the Brazilian state-owned oil giant, is making waves once more by slashing diesel prices. Starting Tuesday, the company will lower the diesel price for distributors by an average of 0.16 real ($0.0283) per liter.
This announcement marks the third consecutive price decrease in the diesel sector by Petrobras as the global trade war intensifies and Brent crude oil prices plummet.
With its most recent reduction, Petrobras follows a series of steep declines in oil prices, revealing a progressive yet cautious approach to adjusting prices.
Notably, Petrobras implemented its pricing policy in 2023, aiming to shield Brazilian consumers from the brunt of unstable oil prices.
The recent cuts saw Petrobras lowering diesel prices by a whopping 12.6% since April began. In March, the company decreased diesel prices by 4.57%, followed by a 3.38% cut in the middle of April. Now, the latest reduction announced brings diesel prices down by 4.66%, reducing the price from R$3.43 to R$3.27 per liter.
These cuts have been influenced by the repercussions of the global trade war sparked by former U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, OPEC+'s decision to boost oil supply beginning in June, and the subsequent drop in Brent crude oil prices. The tariffs reignited import arbitrage opportunities in Brazil, forcing Petrobras to adjust its pricing strategy accordingly.
Despite these reductions, analysts argue that Petrobras's diesel prices remain slightly above international benchmarks, with estimates suggesting a premium ranging between 3.7% and more than 10% above global levels. This indicates that Petrobras continues to charge diesel prices that are slightly higher than world market norms.
