Developments in the Molkenmarkt Project discussed by Andreas Geisel

The Molkenmarkt reconstruction planning in Berlin-Mitte is moving forward, with the next step being the ongoing design competition for the northern part of Block B. Architectural firms have been working on their proposals since July 2025, with the designs due by the end of September. After an anonymous jury evaluation, the results will be displayed in a public exhibition in November 2025.

However, the competition to rebuild the Molkenmarkt ended without a clear winner in mid-September. Andreas Geisel, Berlin's Senator for Urban Development, defended the jury's decision to award the first prize to two competing designs. Petra Kahlfeldt's team will transform the two existing drafts into a master plan for the architectural competition.

The design by the Danish-German office OS arkitekter / CKA chose a radically modern approach for the rebuilding of the Molkenmarkt quarter. Their emphasis is on the development of a climate-neutral and innovative district. On the other hand, the office of Bernd Albers and Silvia Malcovati took a more traditional approach, orienting themselves strongly on the historical, closed-concept block-edge development of the former Molkenmarkt quarter. Their design, like that of OS arkitekter, also emphasizes sustainability.

Andreas Geisel stated that the strengths of both designs must be combined in a further procedure. However, he also emphasized that neither of the two designs would be implemented 1:1. Andreas Geisel's comments about the supply and disposal of the area not being adequately clarified in either design remain unchanged.

The goal of the Molkenmarkt project is to make affordable housing and good architecture compatible. The emphasis on making the project compatible with affordable housing and the time-based goal are new facts introduced in the current paragraph.

Additional visualizations by Bernd Albers / Silvia Malcovati can be found in the article's sources. The visualizations by the office of Bernd Albers / Silvia Malcovati are presented in this article.

The team responsible for the master plan is not specified in the current paragraph. Andreas Geisel's comments about the supply and disposal of the area not being adequately clarified in either design remain unchanged.
