Decrease in exports from Saxony-Anhalt in the initial half of 2025
In the opening months of 2025, the German state of Saxony-Anhalt recorded a total of 11.0 billion euros in exports, with Poland emerging as one of its key trading partners. Poland received 1.4 billion euros worth of exports from Saxony-Anhalt, making it the second-largest European export destination for the state, after the Czech Republic, which received 0.9 billion euros.
The Czech Republic also saw a significant increase in exports from Saxony-Anhalt, with a 13.1% rise compared to the same period in the previous year. The Netherlands, France, and the United Kingdom were also among the main export countries within Europe, although their values decreased by 16.9%, 5.5%, and 1.3% respectively.
The European Union accounted for more than two-thirds (70.5%) of Saxony-Anhalt's exports, with a total of 41.9% going directly to the EU. The United States was one of the main export countries for Saxony-Anhalt outside of Europe, with a value of 0.5 billion euros and an increase of 4.8%. The People's Republic of China was another major export country, although it saw a decrease of 13.9% in the first half of 2025.
On the import side, the United Kingdom was an important country for Saxony-Anhalt, with a value of 1.0 billion euros and an increase of 48.0%. The People's Republic of China was the most significant import country, with a value of 3.4 billion euros and an increase of 81.2%. Imports from Poland and the United Kingdom also increased compared to the same period in the previous year.
It's worth noting that the foreign trade statistics by federal state show exports in the special trade and imports in the general trade for reasons of data collection. A balancing of import and export results is not methodologically justifiable due to these differences.
Saxony-Anhalt sourced 43.1% of its total trade volume from the European Union for imports. The Netherlands, France, the Czech Republic, and Poland were the main import countries within Europe, while the People's Republic of China was another major import country outside of Europe.
In conclusion, while Saxony-Anhalt's exports to some European countries decreased in the first half of 2025, its trading relationships with key partners like Poland and the Czech Republic remained strong. The state also maintained significant trading ties with countries outside of Europe, such as the United States and the People's Republic of China.
