Death of Jürgen Weber Reported
Jürgen Weber, a name synonymous with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, passed away on May 12 at the age of 83. Weber, who served as the CEO of Lufthansa from 1991 to 2003, is being remembered by the current CEO, Carsten Spohr, as 'Mr. Lufthansa.'
Weber joined Lufthansa as a young engineer in 1967 and dedicated his entire professional life to the company. He was appointed to the board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG in 1990 and played a crucial role in the restructuring, privatization, and turnaround of Lufthansa in the 90s.
Under Weber's leadership, Lufthansa became one of the founding members of the global airline alliance 'Star Alliance.' The Star Alliance, initiated by Weber himself, has since grown to become the largest airline alliance in the world.
Weber's strategic foresight was evident in the 90s when he oversaw the restructuring and privatization of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. His efforts were instrumental in shaping Lufthansa and the Lufthansa Group as we know them today.
Karl-Ludwig Kley, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, stated that Weber shaped and influenced the company significantly. He added, 'Jürgen Weber was not only a great manager but also a visionary who always had the best interests of Lufthansa at heart.'
Carsten Spohr, expressing his condolences, thanked Weber for his great merits towards the Lufthansa Group. He said, 'Jürgen Weber was a true pioneer in the aviation industry. His contributions to Lufthansa will never be forgotten.'
Wolfgang Borgmann, an aviation journalist for 30 years, has published 32 books on various aspects of aviation history. Borgmann, who primarily oversees the Industry & Technology section at AERO INTERNATIONAL, praised Weber's contributions to the industry. He said, 'Jürgen Weber will be remembered as one of the founding fathers of the global airline alliance Star Alliance and a key figure in the history of Deutsche Lufthansa AG.'
