Cyclerion's 400% Stock Surge Follows $380M Alzheimer's Merger with Korsana
Shares of Cyclerion Therapeutics surged by over 400% on Wednesday after the company announced a merger with Korsana Biosciences. The deal, backed by a $380 million funding round, will create a new entity focused on Alzheimer's research. The combined firm will trade under the ticker 'KRSA' on the Nasdaq from next year. The merger follows a strategic review by Cyclerion, which had been struggling financially. Its latest annual report showed just $2.07 million in revenue against a net loss of $3.53 million. The company's cash burn had raised concerns about its long-term viability.
The deal will see existing Cyclerion shareholders retain only 1.5% of the new company, with Korsana's investors holding the remaining 98.5%. A private investment round, led by Fairmount and Venrock Healthcare Capital Partners, secured $380 million to fund operations until 2029. This provides a multi-year runway for Korsana's lead drug, KRSA-028, an Alzheimer's treatment currently in early development. Cyclerion's stock price has climbed sharply in recent months, now trading at nearly six times its early February value. However, the company remains without Wall Street coverage, leaving investors without independent financial analysis. The rebranded Korsana Biosciences will focus on advancing KRSA-028, though no human efficacy data is expected before late 2027.
The merger gives Korsana Biosciences a stronger financial footing, with funding secured until 2029. Cyclerion's shareholders will hold a small stake in the new entity, which will prioritise Alzheimer's research. The deal's success will depend on the progress of KRSA-028 in upcoming clinical trials.
