Customs Raids German Hotels: 41 Workers Interviewed, 4 Criminal Cases Opened
Last Friday, the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit of the Customs (FKS) conducted unannounced inspections across Germany's hotel and catering industry. The focus was on ensuring compliance with minimum wage laws and social security obligations. The inspections, conducted by employees of the FKS of the Main Customs Office Aachen, covered businesses in the Aachen city region and districts of Düren and Euskirchen.
Since January 1, 2025, the general minimum wage has been set at €12.82 per hour. During the inspections, 41 employees were interviewed, and criminal proceedings were initiated in four cases for suspected wage withholding and illegal employment. Additionally, eight administrative offense proceedings were initiated, including for not carrying identification documents and violating notification obligations. Eight business records checks were conducted or initiated following the inspections.
The Customs places a particular emphasis on combating black work in the hotel and catering industry, which is subject to the Minimum Wage Act (MiLoG). The FKS aims to ensure fair wages and working conditions for all employees in the sector.
The inspections resulted in several criminal and administrative proceedings, indicating potential violations of minimum wage laws and social security obligations. The FKS will continue to monitor the industry to ensure compliance with the law and protect workers' rights.
