Customs Raid Uncovers 75 Potential Irregularities in Construction Industry
On 16.06.2025, the Financial Control of Undeclared Work (FKS) of the Main Customs Office Saarbrücken conducted a targeted inspection in the construction industry. The operation, involving over 2,800 customs officers nationwide, including 81 from Saarbrücken, uncovered potential irregularities in 75 cases.
The inspection, focusing on social security obligations and minimum wage compliance, found indications of possible wrongdoing in 75 cases. These may lead to further investigation and criminal proceedings. In the Saarbrücken area, 69 employers were inspected, and 332 employees were interviewed.
Customs officers discovered illegal employment of foreigners, resulting in the arrest of six employees without valid residence and work permits. The construction industry, with its various trades and laws, is a focus for customs authorities due to its economic importance and the need to consider multiple regulations. Branch-specific minimum wages apply in certain trades, while the general statutory minimum wage of €12.82 per hour applies to others. Extended follow-up inspections will be conducted to compare employee data with companies' payroll books and examine business documents.
The FKS inspection uncovered potential irregularities in 75 cases, with six employees arrested for illegal employment. Further investigation is underway. The construction industry's complexity and economic significance make it a key focus for customs authorities. Extended inspections will ensure compliance with minimum wage laws and social security obligations.
