Hey there, let's chat about the grime and glitz of last year's customs business in Saxony-Anhalt!

Customs officers in this fine state raked in an astounding €1.9 billion euros in taxes and duties last year. The Main Customs Office in Magdeburg reported that this haul was pretty much the same as the year before. The lion's share—around 1.583 billion euros—came from consumption taxes, with approximately 1.417 billion euros from energy taxes alone.

Speaking of taxes, the envelope-pushers earned a collective tax break of around €202 million euros. The enforcement unit in Halle took care of 120,266 orders and scooped up around €33.86 million euros in outstanding claims—a significant rise from 2023 (€25.04 million euros).

In its relentless pursuit of black work, the Financial Control Schwarzarbeit (FKS) uncovered damages totaling around €14.2 million euros in 677 employer inspections—around five million euros more than the previous year. The Main Customs Office initiated over 2,000 investigations, resulting in fines of around €980,000 euros and nearly 25 years worth of prison sentences.

When it comes to smuggling and illicit goods, customs swooped in to snatch:

  • 707,000 cigarettes
  • Approx. 670 kilograms of water pipe tobacco
  • Nearly 390 kilograms of unlicensed fireworks
  • Drugs such as heroin, amphetamines, and marijuana
  • 32 weapons or weapon parts

For these nefarious doings, 199 criminal proceedings were commenced.

Exports ruled the customs clearance roost, with around 241,000 customs declarations processed last year. Counterfeit goods worth around €615,000 were detected among them.

As of the end of 2024, the Main Customs Office in Magdeburg employed 530 folks, alongside 60 trainees. That's a lot of hands working tirelessly to keep the state's coffers full!
