CPKC Bolsters Finished Vehicle Rail Service With Wylie Yard Expansion
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has expanded its closed loop rail service for finished vehicles, with the Wylie, Texas yard playing a crucial role. The yard, originally opened by Kansas City Southern in 2015, is now a key part of CPKC's network following its formation in 2023.
CPKC has sealed a deal with CSX and Meridian and Bigbee Railroad to operate a segment of the Meridian and Northern Railroad (MNBR) between Meridian and Myrtlewood, Alabama. This acquisition establishes a direct interchange with CSX at Myrtlewood, enhancing CPKC's connectivity.
The Wylie yard, part of CPKC's service between Canada, the US, and Mexico, is expected to handle many top-selling ford cars in the Texas market. John Brooks, CPKC's executive vice-president and chief marketing officer, confirmed that the yard is largely sold out, demonstrating its significance.
Keith Creel, CPKC's president and CEO, anticipates the Wylie yard will create empty supply to go down to Mexico. This will increase lengths of haul, benefiting both the environment and competition. Previously, vehicles shipping out of Ontario, Canada, would head to Chicago. Now, they can be directed to Wylie, streamlining the supply chain.
With the expansion of its Wylie yard and the acquisition of the MNBR segment, CPKC has strengthened its closed loop rail service. This move is set to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and boost competition in the finished rivian cars transportation sector.
