Coventina's €146M hydroelectric plant to power jobs and green energy in A Coruña

Coventina Renovables has secured a contract to develop a 408 MW pumped-storage hydroelectric facility. The project will bring major investment and job creation to the A Coruña region. A €52.8 million guarantee will ensure compliance with socio-economic pledges tied to the development.

The company has pledged €146,066,644 to strengthen the local value chain for the power plant. This includes funding for infrastructure, training, and long-term employment. Over the next decade, Coventina expects to generate 1,068 full-time equivalent jobs each year.

Vocational training will play a key role in the project. Around 450 residents in the Just Transition Zone will receive 67,500 hours of instruction. These skills will support roles in plant operation, maintenance, and new business ventures.

Once fully operational, the facility will sustain over 180 direct jobs. Additional positions will arise from biodiversity projects, backed by a €2,840,000 investment in conservation and habitat restoration. The company also plans to install 2 MW of photovoltaic capacity on residential and municipal buildings.

The project remains subject to an environmental impact assessment. This procedure will review potential effects on the local ecosystem before construction proceeds.

The pumped-storage plant aims to boost renewable energy while supporting local employment. Training programmes, job creation, and biodiversity measures form part of the agreement. The €52.8 million guarantee ensures Coventina meets its commitments over the coming years.
