Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a region in northern Germany, is facing a significant challenge: the upcoming retirement of a substantial portion of its state administration employees. To address this issue, the state government has launched a new recruitment campaign aimed at attracting the next generation of professionals.

The campaign, managed by the Mandarin agency, is not limited to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern but extends to neighbouring regions as well. It aims to showcase the state as an attractive employer and the wide range of activities and sectors in the public administration sector. Advertisements for the campaign will be displayed on streets, in public transport, online, on social media channels, and in traditional media.

The recruitment drive targets potential candidates of all age groups, both within the state and in neighbouring regions. It is intended to encourage exploration of the state's career portal, which currently lists around 140 open positions. These roles span various sectors, including IT, environment, law, bomb disposal, and school psychology.

Alexander Koß, from the Ministry of Finance in Schwerin, emphasised that many returning professionals bring valuable experiences from other places and can now apply them in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where they can enjoy a good quality of life. He also noted a positive trend of people who left the state in their younger years now returning for various reasons.

To manage the retirement of its workforce more effectively, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is employing several strategies. Workforce planning is crucial to identify areas where retirements will impact the organization most significantly. This involves analysing the skills and roles that will be lost and planning for succession.

In addition, the state is implementing training programs for existing employees to ensure they are prepared to fill the gaps left by retiring staff. This approach fosters succession from within. Recruitment campaigns are also being launched to attract new talent, focusing on the benefits of careers in public administration.

Offering incentives for early retirement or deferred retirement options can help manage the timing of retirements more effectively, ensuring a smoother transition. Alexander Koß stated that the campaign's costs are approximately 360,000 euros.

However, despite expectations, the anticipated savings from increasing digitalization in the administration have not materialized. This underscores the need for a comprehensive approach that includes recruitment and training efforts.

It's important to note that the low birth rates and strong competition from the private sector, especially for construction engineers and IT specialists, are making it increasingly difficult to meet the demand for skilled professionals. However, the recruitment campaign offers a promising solution to this challenge.

With nearly 38,000 employees currently employed in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's state administration, more than a quarter of these employees are expected to retire within the next decade. The recruitment campaign is a crucial step in ensuring the state's administration remains robust and effective in the face of these retirements.

  1. In light of the upcoming retirement of a significant portion of state administration employees, the state government is funding vocational training programs for existing employees, facilitating succession from within.
  2. For those considering a career change, the current recruitment campaign in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offers various vocational training opportunities in sectors like IT, environment, law, and school psychology, promising attractive job opportunities and a quality lifestyle.
