Peak Moving Season: Steer Clear of Unscrupulous Moving Companies 🚚⚠️
Moving can be a stressful endeavor, but during the peak season, it becomes a minefield for dodgy practices and hidden charges. Let's tackle the common issues faced by consumers as highlighted by the Office of Consumer Protection (OPC).
In their recent inspections, OPC found shortcomings in 88% of the moving companies they reviewed. The worst offenders have been known to hold precious belongings hostage until extra cash is handed over. As Charles Tanguay, the OPC spokesman warns, "In the worst cases, we've seen movers gaining leverage by keeping your stuff locked up in their trucks until you pay the unexpected fee in cold hard cash."
Out of the 101 moving companies inspected, 89 were issued notices of non-compliance, covering a range of infractions from minor errors to serious violations. These warnings could lead to more intense interventions if illegal practices are detected.
One major concern is the inclusion of prohibited clauses in contracts. For instance, a deposit should be deposited into a certified escrow account. This ensures that if the moving company suddenly ceases operations, the depositor can retrieve their funds.
To avoid being caught off guard, follow these smart tips:
Demand a Detailed Contract 📝
The OPC encourages prospective customers to demand a detailed written contract that includes the departure and arrival locations, scheduled date and time, agreed price or hourly rate, and other pertinent details. "The more vague your moving contract, the greater the risk of surprises," says Mr. Tanguay. Common issues related to moves include unexpected fees, delays, and non-responsibility clauses.
Remember, if the moving company gets paid on time, specify the exact number of movers and the size of the truck. These factors affect the final bill. The mover is expected to stick to the schedule provided. However, delays may occur due to overbooking, especially on July 1st - similar to waiting at the doctor's office.
Your Stuff, Your Responsibility 🔒
If a mover damages your antique furniture or scratches your neighbor's car, they must take responsibility. "If you have a reliable mover, they should also have good insurance," affirms Mr. Tanguay.
To minimize the chances of disputes, it's essential to have people around on moving day to act as witnesses. Additionally, take pictures of your belongings before the move to establish proof in case of damage or loss. As Mr. Tanguay notes, "We find all sorts of things on the market, and with the peak season approaching, many people are looking to capitalize on the overheated market. Vulnerable consumers, such as single people and those with limited resources, are often targeted."
Last year, the Office of Consumer Protection received 165 complaints related to moving, storage, and delivery services. Be vigilant and stay informed! 💼💪
