Construction on Mainz-Süd interchange nears completion after an eight-year duration

The construction work at the Mainz-South motorway interchange, which began in 2017, is expected to be completed by early October 2025. This extensive project, managed by the responsible construction authorities for highways in the region, aims to improve the condition of the bridges built in the mid-1960s, which were classified as 'not sufficient' in 2015.

In a significant development, a full closure of the A63 in the area of the motorway interchange is planned, starting on Friday, September 19, at 8:00 PM and ending on Monday, September 22, at 5:00 AM. During this closure, both directions of travel on the A63 will be affected. Traffic on the A63 towards Mainz and Kaiserslautern will be directed via the Klein-Winterheim interchange, the Mainz-Lerchenberg roundabout, and the Haifa-Allee to Federal Highway 40 at the Mainz-Bretzenheim-South interchange.

Several ramps will be closed during the closure. The connecting ramp from the A60 towards Bingen to the A63 towards Kaiserslautern will be closed, as well as the connections from the A63 towards Mainz to the A60 towards Bingen, from the A63 towards Kaiserslautern to the A60 towards Frankfurt, and from the A60 towards Frankfurt to the A63 towards Mainz.

After the weekend, traffic management on the A60 will be completed and signs will be adjusted. Those wishing to travel from the A60 towards Bingen onto the A63 towards Kaiserslautern will be detoured via the Mainz-Lerchenberg interchange. The currently open hard shoulder in the direction of Bingen towards B40 in the direction of Mainz will then be closed again.

The Federal Motorway Company cannot yet specify exact dates for the reopenings of the ramps due to the weather-dependent nature of the final works. Once completed, traffic will flow again via the regular lanes on the A60. In addition to the construction, the surface of the A63 and various ramps have been renewed.

A renovation was deemed uneconomical, leading to a decision for a complete new build. The construction work, though disruptive, is crucial for the safety and efficiency of the motorway network in the region. It's advised that drivers plan their journeys accordingly and check for updates on the traffic situation before setting off.
