His predecessors who received this recognition saw their careers plummeting: Marcel Ospel, conferred in 1997, was ousted as UBS Chairman by regulators during the financial crisis; Peter Wuffli, promoted to CEO by Ospel and awarded in 2005, resigned unexpectedly in 2007, anticipating the impending financial storm; Josef Ackermann was also granted the accolade in 2009, succumbing to scandal two years later in Germany. But what of Sergio Ermotti?
Ermotti presided over UBS until October 2020, concentrating on transforming the bank with a strategic emphasis on wealth management, Swiss business, and asset management. His leadership cultivated a more capital-light investment banking approach for UBS[1]. In 2020, Ralph Hamers was announced as his successor, taking the helm in November of the same year[1][3].
Post- CEO tenure, Ermotti maintained his influence in the financial sector. In April 2021, he was elected chairman of Swiss Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies[1]. Two years later, in April 2023, he returned as CEO of UBS, replacing Ralph Hamers, after UBS acquired Credit Suisse[1][3]. As of 2025, he remains CEO of UBS, making Europe's highest bank executive's salary[3].
Alongside his illustrious career in finance, Ermotti has been involved in numerous boards and has expressed a potential interest in venturing into Swiss politics[1]. Despite this, he has ruled out certain political roles, stressing that he is "not a politician." This implies that after his 2018 accolade, Ermotti sustained a powerful leadership role in banking, marked by periods of transition, strategic influence, and continued prominence in prominent financial institutions.
