The Mühlhausen bypass, a 24-kilometer stretch between Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza, is facing a delay in its full opening, now planned for summer 2026. The private operator, Via Mühlhausen GmbH, is responsible for the bypass, which is intended to improve the connection of North Thuringia to Erfurt, as well as to the A4 and A71.

The delay is due to challenges encountered early in the year, leading to an extension of the construction time until the end of 2025. About a third of the total Mühlhausen bypass route will be available by the end of 2025, with partial sections to be opened gradually. The project management company, Deges, is reviewing potential contractual consequences as a result of the delay.

Meanwhile, progress continues on other infrastructure projects in Thuringia. The road between Schönstedt and Bad Langensalza was completed in August, and the connecting road between Gömmar and Bollstedt is expected to be opened by the end of October, followed by the state road between Großengottern and Heroldishausen in November.

In a bid to speed up construction projects, the state government of Thuringia is planning to outsource more projects to the Regional Development Agency. This move is aimed at realizing projects faster and more efficiently.

However, it's not just roads that are under construction. The former TA high-rise in Erfurt is planned to be rebuilt by the end of 2027, under one condition. Meanwhile, municipal bridges in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia are in poor condition and require repairs.

Elsewhere, operators of wind turbines in Thuringia must now remove foundations completely, with the company Via Mühlhausen deciding not to carry out these works during the winter months, in the interests of quality.

The state government is also focusing on addressing a backlog of investments in Thuringian barracks, with plans to speed up construction projects there. Despite significant progress, asphalt and marking work is still outstanding on the Mühlhausen bypass.

The B247 with four lanes between Schönstedt and Großengottern North is still on track to open in December, providing another important transport link in the region. The new operator for the 24-kilometer route between Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza, which is scheduled to be fully operational in summer 2026, has not been specified.

Stay tuned for more updates on these and other infrastructure projects in Thuringia.
