The Can Tho - Cà Mau Expressway: Progressing Towards Completion

The Can Tho - Cà Mau Expressway, a significant infrastructure project in the Mekong Delta, is making steady progress as of mid-2025. This 111-kilometer motorway, divided into two sections – Can Tho - Hậu Giang (38 km) and Hậu Giang - Cà Mau (73 km) – is expected to revolutionize regional connectivity and boost economic development [1][2][5].

The construction of the expressway commenced in January 2023, with an investment of over VND 27.5 trillion ($1.14 billion) [1]. As of July 2025, the Can Tho - Hậu Giang section is approximately 73% complete, while the Hậu Giang - Cà Mau section stands at around 67% completion [1]. Of the 102 planned bridges, 96 have had their decks constructed, with most foundation work in place [1].

The Vietnamese Government and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh have emphasized the importance of accelerating the project and have set a firm completion deadline of December 19, 2025. This deadline aligns with the broader national goal to complete 3,000 kilometers of expressways by the end of 2025, which includes the Can Tho - Cà Mau expressway [1][2][4][5].

A previous bottleneck involving embankment materials has been resolved, with over 14.4 million cubic meters of sand stockpiled on site [3]. Furthermore, work on the four components of the Chaû́ Đốc - Cần Thơ - Sóc Trăng Expressway is progressing well, with completion levels ranging from 42% to 54% as of the end of July [3]. The projected cost of the Chaû́ Đốc - Cần Thơ - Sóc Trăng Expressway is nearly VNĐ45 trillion ($1.87 billion) [3].

The Can Tho - Cà Mau Expressway, once completed, will be a critical component of the Mekong Delta's infrastructure network, enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth [1][2][5]. The ambitious timeline for its completion reflects the Vietnamese Government's commitment to modernizing its transportation infrastructure.

The Vietnamese Government is also aiming to leverage AI in the management and optimization of the newly established expressways, such as the Can Tho - Cà Mau, to enhance transportation efficiency [6].

The completion of the Can Tho - Cà Mau Expressway could potentially stimulate the region's AI and finance industries, as increased connectivity may facilitate partnerships and transactions among various sectors [7].
