Construction in Düsseldorf: Two new cycle paths added at Grafenberg

In the heart of Düsseldorf, exciting changes are on the horizon for cyclists and pedestrians in Grafenberg. Here's what you need to know about the upcoming bike lane improvements.

Starting from May 5th, Limburgstraße and Gutenbergstraße will undergo transformative changes, with the creation of new bike lanes aimed at strengthening cycling, making route guidance safer, and separating pedestrian and cycling traffic. The Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection will contribute 287,500 euros towards the project's total cost of approximately 710,000 euros.

At the intersection of Böcklinstraße/Gutenbergstraße, a badly damaged road section will be completely rebuilt. This renovation will also include the creation of a new 2.50-meter-wide two-way bike lane and an equally wide sidewalk with tactile elements. Priority for cyclists will be throughout the route, with drivers expected to reduce their speed and maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters when overtaking cyclists.

On Limburgstraße, a continuous, approximately four-meter-wide bike lane will be created, while Gutenbergstraße will have a continuous width of about 3.50 meters. The sidewalks will then be exclusively for pedestrians. Between Heinzelmännchenweg and Limburgstraße, a new connection in the form of a three-meter-wide two-way bike lane will be created.

Cyclists may ride side by side, and parking is prohibited, except in designated areas. A new pedestrian crossing will be established on Limburgstraße, and a new crossing opportunity for pedestrians to the opposite playground is expected by the end of May. Motorists must adhere to a maximum speed of 30 km/h, and overtaking cyclists will not be allowed during work hours.

Work will begin at the intersection of Böcklinstraße/Gutenbergstraße, with a new crossing opportunity for pedestrians to the opposite playground expected by the end of May. Additionally, Böcklinstraße between Burgmüllerstraße and Gutenbergstraße will be designated as a dead-end street, and a detour will be signposted.

It's important to note that after the bike lanes are established, motorized individual traffic will still be allowed as local traffic. Children under 8 years may use the sidewalk if necessary. The precise completion timeline for the bike lanes on Limburgstraße and Gutenbergstraße is currently not publicly reported, so checking with the City of Düsseldorf’s official channels or local traffic planning offices would be recommended for the most accurate update.

These improvements are part of a larger effort to promote sustainable transportation in Düsseldorf and create a safer, more accessible city for all residents and visitors. So, whether you're a cyclist, pedestrian, or motorist, stay tuned for these exciting changes coming to Grafenberg!
