Congestion on A8 results in a ban on alternative routes
Exit Bans Introduced on German Highways to Ease Congestion
In an effort to alleviate severe traffic congestion on the A8 and A93 motorways in the Bavarian district of Rosenheim, exit bans have been implemented. These bans were announced by district administrator Otto Lederer (CSU) and will be enforced from Friday to Sunday, as well as on public holidays.
The bans are a response to extreme conditions in the spring that caused significant traffic congestion within a radius of up to 20 kilometers. The district of Rosenheim could now serve as a model for other affected districts, as there are already many inquiries from other regions.
The police will enforce the exit bans, with fines imposed for violations. The new exit bans will apply to car drivers, not just trucks, as in the Austrian federal state of Tyrol where similar regulations have been in place for some time.
The model for this measure is the neighboring Austrian federal state of Tyrol, where similar regulations have been in force for some time.
The effects of these exit bans in the Rosenheim district include a reduction in shortcutting traffic through local villages, making local streets safer and less crowded. The federal highway company has also supported these measures by providing signs and LED boards advising drivers on the highway that detours through local exits are futile due to these municipal bans.
The municipal exit bans are currently in effect on all public holidays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with ongoing evaluations planned, including consultations involving Austrian representatives experienced with similar bans, to assess applicability in other congested German regions.
The ADAC South Bavaria assumes that the bans will have a signal effect for other regions. Additionally, detour bans for trucks have also been implemented in the region when there is congestion on the Inntal motorway due to Austria ordering metering traffic.
This is the first nationwide measure in Germany to speed up traffic on the A8 motorway. The exit bans will be enforced at eight exits on the A8 and two exits on the A93 motorways, in addition to the previous ten exits in the Bavarian district of Rosenheim. Both the A8 and A93 motorways are main axes for travel traffic to Austria, Italy, and Croatia. People with destinations in the region are exempt from the exit bans.
As the situation continues to be evaluated, it is hoped that these measures will help to alleviate traffic congestion and improve safety for both drivers and local communities in the affected regions.
