Low-cost retail is highly competitive in Germany, particularly between the titans Aldi and Lidl. In response to rising consumer demand, both corporations have aggressively reduced prices, sparking a fierce price war.

As recently revealed, Lidl plans to lower the cost of over 500 goods by up to 35% across almost all categories in certain regions. Aldi, seizing the opportunity, is slashing prices on nearly 1,000 items permanently, with additional reductions forthcoming for dairy products, meat, frozen food, sweets, and cleaning supplies. These moves represent a testament to Aldi's unwavering commitment to maintaining its price leadership.

This major price cut can be attributed to the current inflation-induced increase in food prices, which were 36.5% higher than the 2020 average in May, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. Moreover, these price reductions appear to be here to stay, as any untimely price hike could damage retailers' credibility.

The Discount Store Race for Market Dominance

Germany's food retail sector has witnessed a substantial growth of 26.6%, reaching approximately €203 billion between 2019 and 2024. Besides Aldi and Lidl, other discount retailers such as Penny, Netto, and Norma also experienced considerable growth. Notably, supermarkets like Edeka and Rewe exhibited a comparable expansion during this period.

In 2024, discount stores accounted for around 38% of the market, whereas full-range supermarkets claimed nearly 29%. Self-service stores and specialized stores, on the other hand, witnessed a decline in market share. This ongoing, aggressive competition can be seen in shifts as flavor-of-the-month supermarkets and consumer stores augmented their market share during the early phases of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, market share since then has primarily stabilized, with discount stores and full-range supermarkets exhibiting a more even struggle for dominance.

A Game of Strategy

According to the renowned market research institute, YouGov, this intensifies competition not only among distribution channels but also between Aldi and Lidl. These price cuts do not represent a short-term promotional tactic; rather, they embody a fundamental principle.

Ruffles, a market expert, suggested that Lidl's moves are geared towards seizing market share and wresting the price leadership from Aldi. Price leadership entails being perceived as the cheapest provider by customers and possessing the ability to dictate prices. Lidl has been quickly gaining ground on Aldi, and some speculate that it could eventually overtake both Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd in terms of overall sales.

Market analyst, Kecskes, echoes Ruffles' observations, declaring the price wars in the discount sector to be "strategic competition for price-sensitive consumers." Retailers deploy such reductions to attract customers, although these savings do not apply to the entire product range. Instead, lower prices on specific items serve as a tactic to draw new customers, who ideally also purchase items with higher profit margins.
