CME Group to Revolutionize Crypto Trading with 24/7 Globex Access

CME Group is set to transform crypto trading with a significant shift in its operational model. The change, pending regulatory approval from the CFTC, will allow CME's crypto products to trade continuously on CME Globex, mirroring the always-on nature of the stock market today. The transition, slated for early 2026, addresses growing client demand for round-the-clock risk management capabilities. Traders will now be able to adjust positions during weekends, mitigating basis risk between the stock market and futures markets. Trading from Friday evening through Sunday evening will carry the following business day's trade date, with clearing, settlement, and regulatory reporting processed accordingly.

The move comes amidst record-breaking activity in CME's cryptocurrency derivatives business. In August, average daily volume surged by 230% year-on-year to 411,000 contracts, representing $14.9 billion in notional trading. The week of September 25 saw a record 1,010 large open interest holders across CME's crypto products. The business reached unprecedented scale, with $39 billion in notional open interest on September 18 and record average daily open interest of 335,200 contracts in August, representing $31.6 billion in notional value.

Tim McCourt, Global Head of Equities, FX and Alternative Products at CME Group, stated that the shift recognizes the unique operational models required for cryptocurrency markets. With the CFTC's approval, this change will provide clients with continuous trading capabilities, further expanding CME's crypto derivatives business.
