** Laying Down the Microsoft Hammer: Danish Cities Ditch Redmond for New Digital Overlords**

Hey there! Given the current political climate, Copenhagen and Aarhus, Denmark's biggest bubbles, have given Microsoft the boot as their primary IT suppliers. Here's a lowdown on why they've said "nai" to the software giant.

Billions Down the Drain?

In an interview with Politiken, city bigwig Henrik Appel Espersen, who chairs Copenhagen's audit committee, spilled the beans on their decision. The primary reasons? Finances and a wary eye on Washington.

With relations between the US and Denmark potentially hanging by a thread, there's a sneaking suspicion that Microsoft might one day decide to cut the power, causing a digital catastrophe across public operations. If Micky Soft pulls the plug, a city-wide panic could ensue. Oops, Can't Send Emails!

Aarhus' city hall also shares these concerns, admitting they've been overly reliant on Microsoft Office programs and cloud services.

Bye-Bye, Microsoft, Hello Alternatives

While some staff members might see the switch as a demotion, both cities are looking to Europe for an alternative. Bo Fristed, head of digital services at Aarhus' culture and citizens' department, revealed that they've already jumped ship to a German provider. This smart move has slashed the department's annual expenses from 800,000 kroner to a measly 225,000 kroner.

Copenhagen seems keen on finding its own European alternative as well. That's some serious digital independence!

The Cost of Loyalty

Over the past few years, Denmark's municipalities have been shelling out big bucks for Microsoft IT—a whopping 538 million kroner in 2023, almost double their 2018 expenditure! That's a lot of krone!

It looks like it's time to explore new horizons and say sayonara to Russia-malick Microsoft! What's next on the agenda? Maybe Linux town?

  1. In an effort to diversify their digital resources and reduce financial burden, both Copenhagen and Aarhus are turning to European tech providers, such as the German one already adopted by Aarhus' culture and citizens' department, which has resulted in significant cost savings.
  2. With the potential political tension between the US and Denmark, Danish cities are exploring alternatives to Microsoft, not only for cost-cutting purposes but also to mitigate any potential digital crisis that could arise from a sudden discontinuation of service.
  3. As Denmark's municipalities have increasingly relied on Microsoft for IT services over the past few years, with expenditures reaching a high of 538 million kroner in 2023, the switch to new European providers could mark a turning point in the country's tech landscape, signaling a shift towards digital self-reliance and a more diverse tech ecosystem.
