China Unveils Its Sixth-Generation Fighter Aircraft, Potential Impact on Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman Discussed

Lockheed Martin, with its iconic F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II, has been at the forefront of stealth fighter jet technology for decades. The Raptor, introduced in 2005, and the Lightning II, debuting in 2015, have left many other nations flying non-stealthy fourth generation jets in their dust. Yet, even these formidable machines are starting to show their age as China enters the sixth generation of fighter jet development.

In late December 2022, the People's Liberation Army unveiled two brand new sixth-generation fighter jets. The first aircraft, reported by TheWarZone.com, is described as a "tailess, stealthy, high-performance sixth-generation crewed combat aircraft." The aircraft, tentatively known as the J-36, is larger than both the F-22 and F-35, measured at approximately 70 feet from nose to tail, and is believed to be powered by an unconventional three-engine system, hinting at potential long-distance capabilities.

Just under 24 hours later, a second stealth fighter made its appearance in Chinese skies. Smaller than the first and with a distinctive two-engine layout, the second aircraft lacks a tail and, intriguingly, may not even have a cockpit, raising theories that it could be an advanced drone.

The Chinese aren't stopping there. Rumors of a stealth bomber, the JH-XX, further indicate that these advanced aircraft could be part of a larger sixth-generation fighter project.

So what does this mean for Lockheed Martin? Despite Chinese advances, the United States Air Force still prioritizes the development of its own sixth-generation fighter, the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) project. Lockheed Martin is reportedly a strong contender for this contract, thanks to its experience building sophisticated stealth fighters in the past.

The race to dominate the sixth-generation fighter jet market is heating up, and investors should keep an eye on the U.S. Air Force's funding of the NGAD project, as well as the developmental progress of these Chinese aircraft. While Lockheed Martin seems well-positioned to stay in the game, it's impossible to predict just how far behind the U.S. might be by 2035, the year China aims to field its sixth-generation fighters.

Enrichment insights:

The Chinese sixth-generation fighter jets feature a tailless design with full-moving wingtips, optimizing for supersonic performance and stealth capabilities. This design boasts advanced sensors and propulsion systems, allowing for operation alongside unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs). The aircraft is projected to achieve "exponential" improvements in radar-absorbing materials, processing power, and sensing capabilities.

China's new sixth-generation fighter jet, known as the J-XDS, features cutting-edge aerodynamic design, including variable-geometry wings and a high-aspect-ratio tail plane. This design optimizes lift and controllability at high speeds, further enhancing agility and maneuverability.

China has experimented with various engine options for its J-31 fifth-generation fighter, including a domestic WS-15 engine and Russian AL-31F engines. The sixth-generation jets could also potentially be powered by hybrid or electric propulsion systems, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

The Chinese stealth bomber, JH-XX, is expected to be equipped with advanced aerodynamic features, such as a unique canard layout, and stealth technologies comparable to those of the U.S. B-2 Spirit bomber. The JH-XX is said to be designed for highly survivable, long-range missions, furthering China's capabilities in air-to-ground strikes.

  6. Given the unofficial revelation of China's sixth-generation fighter jets, investors should consider the potential impact on finance and investment in companies specialized in stealth technology, such as Lockheed Martin, which is competing for the US Air Force's Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) project.
  7. While Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II have been dominant in the fifth-generation fighter jet market, the company should keep a close eye on China's progress in the sixth-generation, as exemplified by the J-36 and other unnamed aircraft, given China's 2035 aim to field their sixth-generation fighters.
  8. The Chinese sixth-generation fighter jets, such as the J-36 and the rumored JH-XX, are set to feature cutting-edge technology like tailless designs, stealth capabilities, advanced sensors, and potentially hybrid electric propulsion systems, which may challenge the existing dominance of US companies like Lockheed Martin in the global fighter jet market.
  9. The development of sixth-generation fighter jets in both China and the US has generated much buzz in the finance and aviation sectors. From an investment perspective, it's crucial to monitor emerging trends in fighter jet technology and stay informed about countries' funding allocations for their sixth-generation fighter jet projects, like China's 2035 timeline for deployment.
