China slams U.S. moves in Venezuela as threat to its $500B Latin America trade empire
China has strongly criticised the U.S. government’s recent actions in Venezuela, calling them a direct threat to its economic interests. The country insists its trade and investments in the region are lawful under international agreements. Over the past two decades, China’s presence in Latin America has expanded rapidly, reaching over $500 billion in trade last year.
Chinese involvement in Latin America spans multiple industries. Major firms like State Grid, China Three Gorges, and PowerChina dominate electricity generation, hydropower, and grid infrastructure. In oil and gas, companies such as CNPC and Sinopec operate joint ventures, including PetroSinovensa with Venezuela’s state-owned PDVSA. Mining giants like China Minmetals, Chinalco, and Tianqi Lithium extract copper, lithium, and gold across Peru, Chile, and Argentina.
Agribusiness and logistics also see heavy Chinese investment. COFCO and CMEC handle grain, meat, and machinery trade, while COSCO Shipping and China Merchants Port manage key ports and transport networks. Tech firms Huawei and ZTE provide digital infrastructure, reinforcing China’s economic footprint. Chinese consumer brands have gained popularity in the region, selling everything from smartphones to cars and food. This deep integration has made Latin America a critical market for Beijing. Now, President Trump’s military and political moves in Venezuela risk disrupting these ties.
The U.S. push in Venezuela could weaken China’s long-built economic influence in Latin America. Beijing’s investments—from oil fields to digital networks—face uncertainty as tensions rise. With trade worth over $500 billion, any shift in regional stability may have far-reaching consequences for Chinese businesses.
