China Aims for Massive Green Energy Boost, Targets 25% to 70% Industrial Sector Decarbonization by Early 2030s

China is set to significantly boost its green energy sector, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicting that the industrial sector will source 25% to 70% of its energy from green sources by the early 2030s. This shift comes as China's emissions are forecast to peak in 2028 at 11.3 billion tons.

The world's largest emitter is taking bold steps to curb its carbon footprint. By 2030, China aims to add 230 GW of non-fossil fuel sources annually. New regulations mandate that industrial sectors, including steel and cement, source 25% to 70% of their energy from green sources by 2025 and 2026. This ambitious plan could see China reduce its emissions by 1.6 billion tons by 2030, with a $2.5 trillion investment in green initiatives over the next five years.

To achieve this, China needs to increase its annual green investment by 40%, reaching 3.5 trillion yuan by 2030. The steel industry, a significant contributor to emissions, will see its production capped at around 900 million tons, well below its 2020 peak of 1.1 billion tons. This transition is expected to drive a surge in wind and solar power, with projections showing growth from 1,700 GW to over 2,800 GW by 2030.

China's commitment to green energy is clear, with significant investments and regulations driving the transition. As the world looks towards the COP30 negotiations in Brazil, China is expected to announce its broader 2035 climate targets, further solidifying its role in the global fight against climate change.
