Chevron Refinery Fire in El Segundo Extinguished Safely

A fire broke out at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo, California, on Thursday night. The blaze started around 9:30 p.m. at a processing unit, leading to elevated levels of volatile organic compounds being detected nearby. Despite the incident, no evacuations were ordered, and all roads were reopened by Friday morning.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District was quick to respond, monitoring air quality in the area. Fortunately, local air quality monitors showed no pollution concerns in El Segundo on Friday morning. The fire was contained within the refinery's fence line, posing no threat to public safety. All personnel at the refinery were accounted for, with no injuries reported.

The refinery, which can process up to 290,000 barrels of crude oil a day, including gasoline, jet, and diesel fuels, saw its fire fully extinguished by Friday morning. Residents were advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed if they saw or smelled smoke or elevated pollution levels. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).
