Industries are poised to capitalize on political turbulence caused by Trump. - Capitalizing on Political Turmoil: Startups Seize Opportunities Amidst Trump's Controversies
Fed up with turmoil under Donald Trump's reign, the German startup scene aims to pull in more foreign talent. According to a study by the Startup Association and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, revealed to the German Press Agency, foreigners play a pivotal role in this industry. They drive innovation, build internationally-focused businesses, and lay the groundwork for financial success.
Cashing in on Trump's Mess for Germany's Advantage
14% of startup founders in Germany hail from abroad, as per the study. Among founders of "Unicorns" (billion-dollar valuation companies), it's a whopping 23%. The main countries of origin are Ukraine, Poland, and Russia, but also Western Europe and India. In contrast, the share of foreign founders among Unicorns in the USA is a staggering 44%.
The Startup Association views this political upheaval as a chance: "Current geopolitical shifts can act as a catalyst to establish oneself as a desirable location in the global competition," they state. The "present political climate in the USA" could lead to a shift "that Germany and the EU should seize."
Foreign Founders: Highly Qualified and Skilled
Foreigners entering the startup landscape are typically well-educated, according to the study. Around 90% have a university degree, with about half of them (56%) excelling in sought-after fields like mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology.
Criticisms Abound: High Taxes and Language Barriers
The location of Germany has its critics among founders, as shown by the analysis. Data stemming from the German Startup Monitor 2024 with 1,828 participants, including 255 founders with an immigration background, reveals the following:
While 80% of all respondents rate the quality of life, security, and stability in Germany positively, only 17% of founders with an immigration background find the immigration conditions favorable, and 34% find the language requirements acceptable. Only 55% also rate the social openness positively.
The US, in contrast, is viewed more attractively by two-thirds of all respondents (67%), primarily due to the high tax burden in Germany and language barriers.
Making Germany More International: Networking, Financing, and Multilingual Offers
To become more appealing to foreign talent, Germany could offer English-speaking events, such as networking, consulting, and financing opportunities. The deputy CEO, Magdalena Oehl, notes, "We urgently need better framework conditions - faster visa processes, multilingual offers, and an international mindset."
