Bus and rail dependability require careful time investment
The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) is working diligently to enhance the reliability of its U-Bahn, bus, and tram services, with significant improvements already achieved through the "Stability before Growth" strategy.
As of mid-July, U-Bahn reliability stands at 93.6%, while tram reliability is at a commendable 97.3%. However, the BVG aims even higher, striving for 99% reliability in all three sectors.
The journey towards this goal is not without challenges. Staffing shortages, operational disruptions, and outdated digital information systems are key obstacles. For instance, the U4 subway line operates at only 25% of its services during rush hour due to low staffing levels.
Delays result mainly from external factors such as roadworks, demonstrations, blocked doorways, irregular traffic conditions, and newly trained drivers gaining routine. The current passenger information systems are manual and not designed for effective real-time disruption management, leading to misinformation and cascading delays.
Regarding planned U-Bahn improvements in the fall, the BVG is continuing its fleet modernization and infrastructure projects. These include the expansion of electric bus depots, the introduction of new vehicles with advanced braking systems for trams, and plans to implement hybrid trolleybuses.
While specific U-Bahn line or schedule upgrades for the fall were not detailed in the available information, it is plausible that these ongoing modernization efforts could contribute to enhancing reliability in the coming months.
Ute Bode, Transport Senator, has spoken about the challenges ahead, estimating that it will take at least another one or two years to reach the required reliability. The exact timeline for the arrival of the new U-Bahn trains remains unspecified.
Despite these challenges, the BVG is determined to overcome operational and technological hurdles and continues to work towards improving overall service quality. The authority expects vehicles to be reliably operational again in the medium term.
