Build-A-Bear Thrives Despite Tariffs, Expands Customer Base to Adults
Build-A-Bear Workshop, the popular toy retailer, has seen a surge in growth and investor confidence. Despite challenges like tariffs and changing consumer habits, the company has adapted its strategies to appeal to a broader customer base and maintain strong sales.
The company's unique pricing strategy, offering birthday bears at a customer's age, has resonated with budget-conscious consumers. This, coupled with licensing deals for nostalgic brands like Hello Kitty and Pokémon, has helped expand its customer base beyond kids. Now, adults and teens account for 40% of its business.
Despite facing increased tariff costs of $11 million this year, Build-A-Bear has managed to control price hikes. The company's revenue grew 11% in the second quarter to a record $124.2 million, leading to an upward revision of its full-year guidance. This impressive performance has driven the company's stock up by 76% in the last year and nearly 2,000% in the last five years, outperforming many tech companies.
However, the company is not without its challenges. Inflation and a stagnating labor market could lead consumers to cut non-essential spending, potentially impacting Build-A-Bear's sales. Additionally, slowing foot traffic at shopping malls and the waning of the current collectibles craze pose potential headwinds. Despite these challenges, Build-A-Bear plans to open 60 stores this year, 10 more than previously announced, demonstrating its confidence in its growth prospects.
Under the leadership of CEO Sharon Price John, who has driven the expansion of the customer base to adults and capitalized on trends post-pandemic, Build-A-Bear Workshop continues to thrive. Despite facing headwinds, the company's innovative strategies and strong financial performance indicate a promising future in the toy retail industry.
