Braunschweig’s Großer Hof district to become a vibrant low-car neighbourhood

Braunschweig is planning a major transformation of its Großer Hof district. The city aims to create a low-car neighbourhood with housing, cultural spaces, and improved public areas. Residents are now being invited to share their ideas at an upcoming main event.

The city administration has begun developing an Integrated Urban Development Concept (IEK) for the Großer Hof area. This plan covers the space from the Alte Markthalle parking lot to Wollmarkt, with goals to reduce car traffic and add new amenities. The vision includes residential units, a district garage, gallery and studio spaces, event venues, and a daycare centre.

A public information event will take place on Wednesday, January 28, at 6:00 PM in the Great Hall of the Reichstraße 3 municipal building. Residents can attend to learn more and contribute their suggestions for the project.

Gerold Leppa, the newly elected head of urban planning, transport, construction, and economy, will oversee the development. His appointment took effect on January 4, 2026, placing him in charge of key projects like the Großer Hof-Viertel. The IEK will also serve as the basis for applying to Germany’s urban development funding programme.

The city’s plans for Großer Hof focus on creating a more liveable downtown area. The public event offers residents a chance to help shape the future of the district. If successful, the project could secure additional funding for further improvements.
