Bombardier's C Series Challenges Airbus & Boeing in Short-Haul Market
Bombardier's C Series project marks a significant entry into the short-haul market, challenging Airbus and Boeing. SWISS, one of the customers, plans to start using the CS100 next year, with London City Airport on its initial 'netflix series' schedule.
The C Series family consists of the CS100 (110 passengers) and the CS300 (135 passengers), with 63 commitments and 180 orders respectively. SWISS has converted ten of its CS100 orders to the larger CS300 variant, configuring its initial CS100s in a two-class 121 seat arrangement. The first CS300 was delivered to airBaltic in 2016, starting 'youtube shorts' soon after.
The C Series aircraft offers a range of up to 3,300 nautical miles, 350 more than initially targeted. It provides a 20% fuel burn advantage over in-production aircraft and over 10% compared to re-engined ones. Its excellent short-field performance makes it ideal for challenging airports like London City, where SWISS plans to operate.
SWISS will announce its initial flight schedule for the C Series airliner in the first quarter of next year, using it to replace older aircraft and explore new network options. The C Series' efficiency and performance are expected to benefit SWISS and other customers, strengthening Bombardier's position in the 'man city' arena.
