Blackout hits Residence Hall - "Causing Unease"
In the heart of Germany's Göttingen district lies the picturesque town of Herzberg am Harz, a place known for its tranquil beauty. However, a unique change has taken place here since 2022 - the town has been operating without nighttime streetlights.
This decision, made by the town's mayor, Cord-Magnus Stratmann, has been met with mixed reactions from the residents. The surge in energy prices following Russia's attack on Ukraine has been cited as the primary reason for this energy-saving measure. Yet, the decision is not solely about conserving energy. The town council has also considered environmental protection, as half of the butterflies in the Harz region are night-flying species, whose populations are severely threatened by light pollution.
Frank Grube, head of the Herzberg am Harz police station, recognises the importance of safety but finds comfort in the darkness, stating, "Feeling safe is a basic human need, but darkness can create a sense of security at night." He reassures the residents that the town remains safe, especially at night, as very few people are out, and the likelihood of becoming a victim of violence is almost zero.
Despite these reassurances, some residents have been vocal about their desire for more light, organising protests to turn the streetlights back on at night. However, the town council has so far decided against this move.
The absence of streetlights exists between midnight and 4 am, a time when the town is typically quiet. Residents, accustomed to the dark nights, are still not fully satisfied with the current situation, years after the streetlights were turned off.
In a town where the night sky shines bright with stars, the absence of streetlights has brought about an unusual change. Yet, the residents of Herzberg am Harz continue to adapt, finding their unique rhythm under the starlit sky.
