Bitcoin Worth Over Half a Million Dollars Mobilized After Six Years of Inactivity
In the world of cryptocurrency, there has been a notable trend of dormant Bitcoin wallets transferring large amounts of BTC to new addresses. This phenomenon, which has been observed since July 2025, involves wallets that have been inactive for years, with movements ranging from tens of millions to billions of dollars.
On July 19, 2025, six such wallets from 2011-2014 moved about 770 BTC (~$48 million). In mid-July, three wallets dormant since December 2020 transferred 10,603 BTC worth $1.26 billion. Earlier in the same month, a single wallet dormant for over 14 years moved 80,000 BTC valued above $8.6 billion. On July 4, two wallets inactive since 2011 collectively moved 20,000 BTC (~$2.18 billion).
The reasons behind these transactions are not definitively known due to Bitcoin’s pseudonymous nature. However, several theories are prominent. These include speculative activity by early adopters or "whales", institutional involvement, sophisticated wallet management and privacy efforts, and market signaling or securing assets.
One such example is the recent deposit of 500 BTC into Coinbase Prime, which occurred two hours ago. This wallet received 500 BTC six years ago when the price of BTC was $7K, a value that, if deposited at the end of December 2024, would have been over $27.7 million. On January 10, 2025, this same amount was worth approximately $46.87 million.
The exact date of the initial deposit of 500 BTC into the wallet is not specified. However, the wallet had been inactive for a total of 11 years (6 years plus the initial 5 years since its last activity). It is worth noting that this transaction is not related to any advertisements.
The source of this information is Lookonchain analysts. While the exact motives for these transactions remain speculative given anonymous blockchain data, the trend of "Sleeping Beauty" wallets reactivating after long dormancy correlates with Bitcoin’s prolonged bull market phase in mid-2025, potentially signaling large holders’ changing strategies in response to market conditions.
