Bill Gates Transfers $7.9 Billion to Melinda French Gates’ Nonprofit Empire
Bill Gates has transferred nearly $8 billion to a nonprofit led by his former wife, Melinda French Gates. The move significantly boosts the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, placing it among the world’s largest private charitable organisations by assets. The $7.9 billion transfer is part of a broader $12.5 billion agreement reached between the two in 2024. This funding surge strengthens Melinda French Gates’ position as a major independent figure in global philanthropy. The foundation, established in 2022, serves as the nonprofit branch of Pivotal Ventures—a venture-style investment group she founded over a decade ago. Unlike traditional charity models, Pivotal Ventures focuses on driving systemic change through strategic investments rather than one-off donations. Despite its vast resources, the foundation operates with a lean team. Official records list just three employees: CEO Shivani Garg Patel, President and Treasurer John Sage, and Vice President Brooke Anderson. Melinda French Gates herself holds a director role, overseeing its direction. Pivotal Ventures, the foundation’s parent organisation, was launched in 2019. Its approach blends philanthropy with venture capital tactics, aiming to tackle large-scale social issues through sustainable, long-term solutions. The transfer solidifies the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation’s financial standing and influence. With nearly $8 billion in assets, it now ranks among the top private charitable groups globally. The funds will support its mission of driving systemic change through strategic investments.
