Meet Bettina Hagedorn, the Gritty SPD Politician in Germany's Budget Committee

Stepping back into the hot seat in Berlin, Bettina Hagedorn, the no-nonsense SPD member from Ostholstein, resumes her role in the Budget Committee of the 21st German Bundestag. With her tenure in the Committee since 2002, she now holds the record as the longest-serving member in the history of the republic.

Hailed as an unyielding force in the world of politics, Hagedorn has also served as a member of the Budget and Audit Committee since 2002 and has been the deputy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group for the Budget Committee from 2009 onwards.

As Parliamentary State Secretary for the Budget and Europe under then Federal Minister of Finance Olaf Scholz from March 2018 to December 2021, she has made her mark in Germany's financial sector. Despite her high-profile role, Hagedorn continuously attended every Budget Committee meeting and answered questions from parliamentarians on behalf of the federal government, even during her tenure as Parliamentary State Secretary.

When asked about her return to the Budget Committee, Hagedorn expressed her excitement to represent the SPD from Schleswig-Holstein once more. With an unbeaten streak of never missing a single Budget Committee meeting since 2002, she has weathered numerous political storms and government shake-ups along the way. In the upcoming legislative period, she will serve as deputy to fellow SPD committee chair Thorsten Rudolph (Rhineland-Palatinate).

In her new role, Hagedorn will focus on topics related to the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF), a critical investment in infrastructure given the multi-billion euro investments agreed upon in parliament. She will also manage the finances of the Environment and Climate Ministry, the Federal President's Office, and Europe's financing.

Hagedorn's passion for sustainability and environmental protection shines through in her role. She looks forward to the forthcoming challenges ahead, ensuring Germany's financial success while maintaining her commitment to safeguarding the environment at both national and international levels.

Born on December 26, 1955, in Kiel, Hagedorn has been a stalwart member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) since 1983. Over the years, she has held various influential roles within the party, including being a member of the SPD district executive in Ostholstein from 1991 to 2003 and serving as deputy district chairwoman from 1993. She also served as a member of the state executive committee of the SPD in Schleswig-Holstein from 2003 to 2019 and as deputy state chairwoman from 2007 to 2019.
