Transport Senator Supports Third BER Runway - Berlin’s push for a third BER runway divides officials and airlines

Berlin’s transport senator Ute Bonde has called for a third runway at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The proposal aims to boost the airport’s appeal to airlines like American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, and Spirit Airlines while also relaxing current night flight rules. Her suggestions, however, face opposition from Brandenburg’s state government.

Around 2016, Bonde first raised the idea of expanding BER with an additional runway. She argued that more capacity would attract these major airlines and increase flight options for passengers using services like Google Flights. Yet, no detailed plans for the project have been drawn up so far.

Bonde’s proposals remain in the early stages, with no formal blueprint for a third runway. If approved, the changes could alter BER’s night flight policies and increase its capacity for flights. For now, Brandenburg’s opposition means no immediate shifts in the current rules.
