Business Associations Expect More Unemployment in Berlin - Berlin's Hospitality Sector Faces Perfect Storm of Challenges
Berlin's hospitality sector is grappling with significant challenges. Employment prospects are bleak, with 55 percent of companies anticipating a decrease in jobs. This follows a rise in unemployment, reaching 10.3 percent in September 2025. The city welcomed 5.9 million visitors in the first six months of 2025, a 1.8 percent dip from the previous year.
The hospitality industry is bracing for further job losses. None of the surveyed companies expect employment to increase. This mirrors the stagnating or decreasing number of socially insured employees in the city. Unemployment is projected to rise further in the coming months.
The sector's outlook is grim. Fifty percent of hospitality companies rate the current situation as poor, with only four percent reporting positive conditions. Berliners are also tightening their belts, spending less on dining out. This restraint, coupled with a three percent decline in overnight stays in the first half of 2025, paints a concerning picture.
The hospitality industry in Berlin faces a perfect storm of challenges. Employment pressure is high, unemployment is rising, and visitor numbers are declining. With Berliners cutting back on spending, the sector must navigate these headwinds to ensure its long-term sustainability.
