Cold bus burned - Homeless care restricted - Berlin’s homeless cold-weather buses destroyed in suspected arson attack

Two of Berlin’s cold-weather buses, which help homeless people during freezing nights, are now out of service. A suspected arson attack left one vehicle completely destroyed and another badly damaged. With temperatures dropping sharply, the loss has created an urgent need for loans and repairs.

The fire broke out late last night, destroying one bus entirely and leaving the second in need of significant repairs. No injuries were reported, but the incident has disrupted vital services. The Berliner Stadtmission, which operates the buses, typically handles around 120 requests for help on cold nights.

Last winter, the three buses provided shelter, hot drinks, and transport to emergency accommodation for over 2,100 people. Now, with two vehicles unavailable, the organisation has secured a temporary minibus with a wheelchair ramp. However, it cannot meet the usual demand. The Gebewo foundation has launched a GoFundMe appeal for financial donations to fund a new bus and repair the damaged one. Until then, the Stadtmission will struggle to distribute sleeping bags, soup, and safe transport to those in need.

Without immediate funding, the Stadtmission’s ability to assist homeless people during the cold snap remains limited. The temporary minibus offers partial relief, but a full recovery depends on repairs and a replacement vehicle. Donations are being collected to restore these essential services as quickly as possible.
