Belarus refunds journalist one ruble after admitting financial blunder

Journalist Ihar Karney has received an unusual refund from Belarusian authorities. After a year-long investigation, the Investigative Committee admitted an error in its financial calculations. The correction resulted in a symbolic payment of just one Belarusian ruble.

The case began when the financial and economic department of the Investigative Committee for Minsk reviewed Karney’s file. Initially, they had billed him for costs linked to 'colonial labour' and feed consumption during his time in detention. But a recalculation revealed a mistake in their favour.

By Christmas, Karney received a formal letter from the committee. The document, written with a respectful 'you' and capitalised pronouns, informed him that one ruble was owed to him. To collect the amount, he was invited to their Minsk office.

Karney attended the appointment, where officials handed him the single ruble. The sum, while minimal, marked the end of a lengthy administrative process.

The refund closes a chapter in Karney’s legal dealings with the committee. Though the amount was symbolic, the admission of an error followed a full review of his case. The journalist now holds the unusual distinction of receiving a one-ruble correction from state authorities.
