Behring Case: Court Begins Distributing CHF 67.6M to Victims
In a significant development, the Federal Criminal Court has begun distributing funds to victims of the notorious Behring case. The court ordered the seizure and confiscation of assets in 2017, following Behring's conviction for professional fraud in 2016.
Dieter Behring, the mastermind behind a Ponzi scheme in the 1990s, caused harm to over 1700 people and embezzled a staggering CHF 800 million. The total claim for damages in the case amounts to over CHF 220 million. In 2017, the court ordered Behring to pay a damages claim of CHF 100 million, with the seized assets to be confiscated.
The lengthy legal proceedings have led to the distribution of CHF 67.6 million to 630 claimants, representing around 30% of the total damages. This money comes from the seized assets. However, some assets remain unrecovered and are held in Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. The justice system is currently seeking assistance from these states to retrieve these funds.
So far, 705 people have made claims, with 630 receiving damages. The distribution of CHF 67.6 million is a significant step towards justice for the victims of the Behring case. The court's actions aim to compensate for the harm caused by Behring's fraudulent activities, despite the ongoing challenge of recovering all the unrecovered assets.
