Beginning March 2026, the transformation of Stötteritzer Straße into Breslau Straße will take place.
Stoetteritz Street, a busy artery in the heart of the city, is set for a significant transformation. The city assembly has approved a renovation project that promises to modernize the street, improve traffic safety, and promote sustainable mobility.
Modern Trams and Improved Infrastructure
The core of the renovation is an enlarged track spacing to accommodate next-generation trams. These modern, energy-efficient trams are designed for enhanced comfort and accessibility, and will be accompanied by improved tram stops with better shelters, real-time information displays, and increased capacity.
Promoting Cycling and Pedestrian Safety
To promote safe and convenient cycling, dedicated, protected bike lanes will be created along Stoetteritz Street. These lanes will be integrated with existing city bike networks to improve connectivity for cyclists. The entire street space will be redesigned with new tracks, barrier-free stops, a renewed street, and an expanded Stoetteritz Plaza.
The renovation also includes upgraded pedestrian crossings with better visibility and signaling, traffic calming measures such as reduced speed limits, speed bumps, and clearer lane markings, and enhanced lighting and signage for increased night-time safety.
Construction Timeline and Details
The planning and design phases have been completed, with construction expected to start within the next 6 to 12 months. The project is aimed for completion within 18 to 24 months after construction begins, with the goal of minimal disruption to traffic and daily commuters.
The Stoetteritz Street renovation will extend from Riebeck Street to Breslau Street, starting from March 2026. During this phase, parking spaces in the construction area will be rearranged alongside the new cycling facilities, with some spaces being removed due to the reorganization.
Additional Features and Improvements
As part of a complex construction project with the Leipzig Group, the track infrastructure will be modernized, water pipes renewed, and the street expanded. Some areas of the old bike paths will be used to enlarge tree pits and create parking spaces.
A new pedestrian crossing will be built near the Stoetteritz S-Bahn station, and a mobility station will be installed for barrier-free transfers between bus, train, and tram. To calm traffic, Thonberger Street will become a one-way street.
Financing and Decision-Making
The city council has confirmed the construction and financing decision for the city's share of a total of 7.5 million euros. This includes the installation of "refuge islands" at the intersections with Fuchshainer Street and Hofer Street, a noise-reducing grass track for city-bound traffic between Kregel Street and Riebeck Street, and the rebuilding of the intersection of Stoetteritz Street, Fuchshainer Street, and Hofer Street with improved bike parking, new benches, and a tactile paving system.
The Mobility and Infrastructure Department also plans to install a traffic light system at the intersection of Paper Mill Street/Schoenbach Street.
This extensive renovation project represents a significant step towards creating a more sustainable, safe, and accessible city for all road users. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses!
The renovation project will incorporate improvements in public-transit, with next-generation trams and modernized track infrastructure being implemented on Stoetteritz Street. Additionally, the finance sector will contribute to the project's funding, amounting to a total of 7.5 million euros, which will enable the construction of refuge islands, noise-reducing grass tracks, and tactile paving systems, among other features.
