Basel-Stadt quadruples funding for global poverty reduction by 2029

Basel-Stadt has approved a major boost in funding for international development work. The new law, named Giza, will take effect in January 2026 and set clear rules for poverty reduction projects. Tandiwe Erlmann has been appointed to lead the effort as head of the Development and Cooperation Office.

The cantonal government will raise annual funding from CHF 4.3 million to CHF 19.5 million by 2029. This increase aligns with a target of 0.7% of tax revenue, based on current financial levels. The money will support project grants, social partnerships, scholarships, and emergency aid—all tied to strict quality standards.

The new law and funding plan mark a clear shift in Basel-Stadt’s approach to international cooperation. With Erlmann at the helm, the office will begin rolling out projects in early 2026. The expanded budget and strategic priorities are set to guide development work through to 2029.
