Bangladesh's First Specialized Snakebite Ward Inaugurated at RMCH
Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) has inaugurated Bangladesh's first specialized snakebite and toxicology ward, a significant step towards improving treatment and reducing fatalities from venomous snakebites. The high-dependency unit, established by RMCH, is a pioneering initiative led by its director, Brigadier General FM Shameem Ahmed.
The new ward, located at Chittagong Medical College Hospital, accommodates 8 male and 4 female patients, providing immediate and specialized care around the clock. It is well-equipped with adequate anti-venom supplies, ensuring that patients receive prompt and effective treatment. Previously, snakebite victims were treated in general wards, often arriving late due to the lack of specialized facilities.
The ward aims to decrease venom-related deaths, with a focus on reducing the 27% mortality rate among Russell viper bite victims recorded between 2016 and 2023. Since its inception, the ward has treated 1,205 patients, including 260 cases of venomous snake attacks, from January to October 2023. All treatment and medicines in the ward are provided free of charge, with each anti-venom dose costing around Tk 13,000 and typically requiring 10 vials.
RMCH's initiative to establish the first specialized venom ward in Bangladesh is expected to significantly improve treatment outcomes and reduce mortality rates. The new facility, with its dedicated medical staff and adequate anti-venom supplies, is poised to become a lifeline for venomous snakebite victims across the country.
